A Smarter Way to Monitor a Complex Campus

Guide Dogs of America (GDA) operates a unique and busy campus where environmental conditions matter every day. From kennels and puppy nurseries to veterinary care areas, food storage spaces, dormitories, meeting rooms, and a large auditorium, GDA needed a reliable way to keep an eye on temperature and indoor air quality across the facility.

Traditionally, staff relied on manual temperature checks. While effective, this approach was time-consuming and could leave gaps between readings. A sudden rise in temperature inside a kennel, a refrigeration failure, or poor ventilation during a crowded event could go unnoticed until it became a problem.

GDA needed a smarter, more proactive approach.

The Challenge: Protecting What Matters Most

For GDA, environmental monitoring isn't simply about maintaining comfortable conditions. It can directly affect animal welfare, food safety, and the experience of staff and visitors. In the kennels and nurseries, rising temperatures can create uncomfortable and potentially unsafe conditions for vulnerable dogs. In the kitchen and food-storage areas, a freezer or cooler failure could result in thousands of dollars in spoiled food.

Then There Was Indoor Air Quality

Large events, including graduation ceremonies, bring significant numbers of people into the auditorium and other gathering spaces. With more people comes increased CO₂ levels, making effective ventilation especially important. GDA needed visibility into all of these environments without adding another labor-intensive task for staff.

The Solution: Campus-Wide LoRaWAN Monitoring

Enerlon deployed a passive, 14-node LoRaWAN sensor network across the GDA campus. Rather than requiring staff to manually check conditions throughout the day, the sensors continuously monitor key environmental conditions and provide automated alerts when readings move outside established parameters. The monitoring system was organized around two primary needs: animal welfare and food safety, and human comfort and indoor air quality.

Custom Dashboards Put Sensor Data at a Glance

In addition to automated alerts, Enerlon's monitoring solution provides GDA with custom dashboards that bring sensor data into one centralized view. Facility managers can quickly see current readings and sensor status across the campus without having to physically visit each location. The dashboards can be organized around the information most important to GDA, making it easier to monitor temperature, humidity, CO₂ levels, and other sensor readings while also providing visibility into the status of the connected sensors themselves. This gives staff a simple way to identify conditions that may require attention, review trends, and quickly determine whether sensors are reporting normally, all from a centralized digital interface.

Protecting Animals and Food

Ten temperature and humidity sensors were strategically installed throughout the campus. Seven sensors monitor the kennels, while two are located in the nursery and another is positioned in the veterinary care office. These sensors provide continuous visibility into temperature conditions, helping staff identify rising temperatures before they become a threat to animal comfort or safety. Two additional sensors monitor the freezer and cooler. If refrigeration equipment fails and temperatures begin to rise, staff receive an immediate alert so they can respond before valuable food is lost. The custom dashboards complement these alerts by giving staff a centralized view of current conditions and sensor status, making it easier to monitor multiple locations at once.

Monitoring Indoor Air Quality

Four CO₂/IAQ sensors were installed in high-occupancy areas: the auditorium, administrative boardroom, dorm dining room, and dorm lounge. These sensors give facility managers real-time insight into indoor air quality and CO₂ levels. During busy events such as graduation ceremonies, that information can help staff determine when additional ventilation may be needed to maintain a comfortable environment for guests. Dashboard visibility allows staff to review these readings in one place, rather than relying on individual checks throughout the facility.
